Additional Info:

Record taken from transcription by Edna Barrowclough in 1975 and updated from St.  Paul's Church records and funeral notices by John Smith.  This cemetery was photographed and uodated July 2020 by Ron Smith.

Land for a cemetery and church building was deeded by James Rutledge and his wife, December 22, 1840 to the Rev.  Jonathan Shortt and his successors in office as ministers in the township of Hope, forever.  A nominal sum of 5 shillings was paid ; deed was registered in 1842.

First frame church was built in 1842 and the first two burials in the cemetery, which surrounds the church on three sides, were John and George Wilson, sons of John and Sarah Wilson who died that October of scarlet fever.  The first adult was Joseph Harcourt, killed at a barn raising in September 1843.

There are many interesting tombstones, one bearing the crest of the Spencer family.  Another is carved to simulate a pile of wooden blocks with a scroll on the front for inscription, a similar stone is in the Presbyterian cemetery in Perrytown, but much smaller.  Another burial here was the last occasion when a funeral director in Port Hope used the horses on the hearse for the last time, 1922.  When James Wilson was buried in 1892, six nephews rode six black horses to the funeral.

There are a few broken stones and these are recorded.  The cemetery was leveled some years ago and stones put in fairly regular rows.

It is known there are other burials, but names are not available.  The cemetery is well kept and still in use.

Area of the cemetery is 210 ft by 280 ft.
