Additional Info:

Record taken from a transcription by Edna Barrowclough in the mid 1970s and updated by members of the Lakeshore Genealogical Society during the summer of 1996 and a review of the cemetery burial records on August 27, 1996.

This record has been updated from the Town of Port Hope Burial Record dating back to the beginning of the cemetery.  Included in this update are the causes of death which are transcribed from the record many of which are hard to read and/or not easily understood.  Some records in this file may give the burial date instead of the death date.

This file is currently being maintained by the Town of Port Hope.

The original cemetery was around the present St.  Mark's Church and deeded to that church after the building was reopened and St.  Mark's formed.  In 1853, William Miller Smith deeded eight acres to St.  John's and fencing, grading, and plot layout was done in the new cemetery in 1862.  A subscription was taken for the building of a chapel for funerals and afternoon services on Sunday.  This was done and the chapel remains.  In the late 1960s, the cemetery was turned over to the Union Cemetery who now administers it.

Notes

Joseph Soney (Kechemahmaung-ahkogun), son of Charles Nahnaquay Soney and Jane Shipman, was born on Walpole Island First Nation. He is a descendant of Chief Little Turtle of the Miuami tribe in the Ohio area. The Soney family was adopted by the Pottawatami and Chippewa nations when they arrived on Walpole Island.

Joseph arrived at the Shingwauk residential school, as student no. 272, in Sault Ste. Marie on 10 October 1884. At Shingwauk, Joseph trained to be a teacher, staying at the school for six years.

In 1890, Rev. Wilson, head of Shingwauk, wanted to see if David Wanbegeezis Osahgee, and then Joseph, could compete academically with TCS students. Both boys excelled. Records of their time at TCS are limited, due to two fires, but it is noted that in Year 2 Joseph was in the top third of his class. Sadly, he died of inflammation of the lungs in his third year. (The Town burial record reports "pneumonia and heart failure".) A funeral was held in the school's Anglican Chapel.

On Canada's first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, 30 September 2021, a graveside service was held in remembrance of Joseph and all children affected by the residential system. This gathering was organized by members of the Trinity College School community. On the second Nation Day for Truth and Reconciliation, 30 September 2022, members of Joseph's extended family gathered with the TCS community to dedicate a new stone and cedar tree to Joseph's memory.

How to Submit Photos for Joseph Soney

Until such time as a photo "Drag and Drop" function has been added to Cemsearch, here is the way to prepare your photos for inclusion in our database:

 • IMPORTANT: FIRST select the person in Cemsearch for whom you want to add a photo, then re-open this help screen.

 • You currently have selected Joseph Soney. You can submit photos for his plot's monument(s) or personal photos of just him.

 • On your computer, locate the file(s) of the photo(s) you want to submit for Joseph Soney.

 • DO NOT make duplicate photos of the same side of a stone for each person shown on it. For example, if husband and wife are both shown on one stone image, DO NOT make two copies of this image; only one is required.

 • For MONUMENT Pictures, do the following:
   • Copy this code: PHSTJN@1686; (MUST include the semicolon)
   • Rename the monument files you previously located by pasting this code as a prefix to each filename.
   • IMPORTANT: The code PHSTJN@1686; is SPECIFIC to ALL people on this stone or plot.

 • HINT: for convenience, these codes also appear below the Born/Died dates where you can click on them to automatically copy them.

 • ATTACH photos (full size; if you can, limit to about 1-2 megabytes in size) with the prefixed filename to an email and send to: helpus@cemsearch.ca.

 • If you have further details that you would like included in the "Notes" section, add them to the email as well.
