Additional Info:

Sophiasburgh Cemetery, located at 504 Cty Rd 15 in Demorestville K0K1W0.  Formerly known as the Boulter Cemetery.  It is managed by Glenwood Cemetery for P.E.  County.  The land was originally donated to the Presbyterian Church by the late Griffith Howell and the late Wellington Boulter who operated the first canning factory in Prince Edward County - in 1848.  Thirteen internments were received at the cemetery before it fell into disuse in 1902.  In 1974, as a community project, the cemetery was completely restored Gravestones from other area cemeteries were moved to Sophiasburgh Cemetery, including those from the Eben Fox farm, also known as Fence Corners, and those from the Ruttan family plot.  These have been mounted in a cairn on a knoll in the cemetery.  Angus McGill Mowat, father of Canadian author Farley Mowat, was buried here.  A bell from the Northport United Church (originally dedicated in 1887) adorns the property.  It remains the only active cemetery in the township.

Recorded by Loral and Mildred Wannamaker, 1962 to 1967.  I t was updated by Steve Clarke in the fall of 2023.  It was named Old Boulter prior to 1974.
