Additional Info:

Friends (Quaker) Cemetery.  This burial plot is located in the Village of Bloomfield across the street from the Christian Reformed Church.  The plaque at the entrance reads: The Univeraslist Burying Grounds and Site of The Church of the First Universalist Society of the County of Prince Edward 1848 - 1898.  It is said that the Conservative sect of the Quakers maintained and used this cemetery.  In 1817 John Bull and Jonathon Bowerman donated land to the Society for the purpose of constructing facilities to satisfy the needs of a rapidly-growing congregation.  The Brick Meeting House was used by Orthodox Friends who continued to hold services there until 1942.  In 1948 the grounds were purchased by Christian Reformed Church, which removed the Quaker structure and erected the present building.  Among the earliest burials are James Smith (1822), and Gilbert Rogers (1817).  The Friends (Quaker) Cemetery underwent revitalization in 1992.  Approval was received from the Province of Ontario for further development of 450 gravesites and a new roadway and landscaping helped beautify the burial ground.  Additional landscaping and gravestone maintenance and replacement is planned for the future.
