Additional Info:

Hicksite Friends Cemetery, located at 20 Wellington St.  Bloomfield, ON, at the corner of Wellington St.  and Wesley Acres Road.  In 1828, the influence of evangelical Methodism and forces inside the Society of Friends brought about a separation in American and Canadian Quakerism, according to History of the Churches of Prince Edward County.  The evangelical Quakers then became known as the Orthodox Friends while members of the Quietistic school (who stood for traditional freedom) were dubbed the Hicksite Friends after Elias Hicks, a Long Island preacher.  Prince Edward County was the main centre for the Hicksite Friends in Eastern Upper Canada in the early 19th century.  The Hicksite Friends secured a lot from Stephen White on the west end of Bloomfield and a Meeting House was built in 1834-35.  Although the building was removed in 1931, the land is still marked as the Hicksite Cemetery.  This cemetery, which is in good condition, is nearing permanent capacity.

Notes

Gary Stephen Bowerman was born May 6, 1941 in Picton, Ontario to parents Stephen Morley Bowerman & Joy Elizabeth Culmer who are also buried here in the family plot with Gary. Gary moved from Picton to Belleville with his family in 1951 and he took up a membership at the Bay of Quinte Golf & Country Club. At the Club, Gary distinguished himself as a professional, willing several junior championships, as well as the Men's Club Championship in 1962. He turned professional in 1963 and began working at the Islington Golf Club in Etobicoke, Ontario. Some of Gary's professional wins include Ontario Assistants' Championship in 1965 & 1966; Bay of Quinte Festival Pro Tournament in 1967 and again in 1976; and seven appearances in the RBC Canadian Open. His best showing at the RBC Open was in 1970 where he tied for 22nd place. He was set on earning his PGA Tour card and succeeded in obtaining that in the winter of 1969; he was the 12th and final player selected. Gary also managed to win the 1971 Arizona Open and the 1973 British Columbia Open. In January 1977, Gary headed to Sanford, Florida for a few weeks of preparation before tournament play. It was there that Gary began suffering congestion and according to his father Steve, he had developed a blood clot which resulted in a pulmonary embolism. Gary died January 22, 1977 while in Casselberry, Seminole County of Florida. Gary was inducted to the Belleville Sports Hall Of Fame 10 years after his death and for some time, the Canadian Tour memorialized Gary with the Gary Bowerman Memorial Award. Gary was 35 years old when he died.
