Additional Info:

In 1837, Father A. Kernan, a native of Galway Ireland, was appointed to establish a parish headquartered in Cobourg, that would extend from Trenton to Oshawa.  The first church in Cobourg built in 1839 was a frame building dedicated to St.  Polycarp and was located on William Street.  Father Kernan suffered a fatal injury in a fall from a horse when he was thirty-eight years old.  His remains were interred beneath the church but later moved to the central mound in the parish cemetery in 1895.

By 1859, the church was found to be inadequate in size and a brick addition was erected which doubled the size of the church.  Four years later, the original wood section was destroyed by fire and replaced by brick.  At this time it was rededicated to St.  Michael.  The cornerstone for the present St.  Michael's Church was laid on June 9, 1895 and the church was dedicated on Feb.  23, 1896 by Bishop R.A.  O'Connor.

Records taken from a transcription by Rob Mikel in 1983 and updated from a site check by Allan Birney in July 1996.  The records from St.  Polycarp and St.  Michael's registers were added in March 2003 by Ron Smith and Paul Morton.

The original St.  Polycarp cemetery was located where Kraft Foods once stood; some of the monuments and remains were transferred to the current St.  Michael's cemetery site and this file contains the combined records of both as we are unable to distinguish where many of the older burials took place and which ones may have been moved.

This cemetery was photographed and updated by Keith Edwards in March of 2019.  The burial records were updated by Jayne Lazure.
