Records taken from transcription by Sybil Hicks, in April 1993. Record was updated during the summer of 2003 by Alan and Debbie Elder of the Lakeshore Genealogical Society. This cemetery was photographed and updated in November 2020 by Keith Edwards.

Rev. William Case, a leader in early Methodism in Upper Canada, native of Massachussetts, served in Canada since 1805 except for 5 years when he was Presiding Elder in N.Y. State. He spent many of his early years in the Belleville area. In 1826 he invited two native Indians from Brantford to come to the area to give some spiritual guidance to the local Indians. Many local

Indians were influenced by Case to enter the ministry in different roles (missionaries, pastors, exhorters).

Case chose Grape Island (southeast of Belleville) with an area of 10 acres, to nurture and educate his new group of Christian Indians. On October 26, 1826 the local Indians signed a 999 year lease giving Case the use of Grape Island as his Mission Station. By January 1827 Rev. Case claimed 90 adults & 40 children had "embraced the faith". Later, a group from Kingston & Gananoque joined the Grape Island Mission.

In the spring of 1837 the mission at the overcrowded Grape Island Mission came to an end. Sir John Colborne assigned 3,500 acres in Alnwick Twp. The land was surveyed into 50 acre lots in 1835. The Conference of 1836 appointed Case and two others to supervise the move of the Indians to their new home. They named it Alderville, in honour of the Rev. Robert Alder, who was Secretary of the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society (England) between

1833 and 1851.

Grape Island was quiet again after 1837. Two Indian families stayed there to farm it for some years. The Indians at Alderville quickly built their fine white clapboard church at the heart of the village.

Rev. Case is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave.
